I think that’s kind of a cool cover. Just proves STWPT can do anything.
I bet the person who requested a “classic” song was thinking along the lines of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or maybe “Stairway to Heaven”, but I can almost guarantee he didn’t have a number from George Gershwin’s amazing folk opera Porgy and Bess in mind.
This version is pretty interesting, but I think that part of the original song’s brilliance dies by leaving off the minor key and all those nice augmented-seven chords. Way to make it your own, though.
Gotta say I loved this! I have a small collection of different versions of this song and it was really nice to hear your take on it. I completely disagree that part of the song “died” by not playing it the traditional way as well. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to hear Kathleen Battle sing to such a minimalist version, but you were aiming for something completely different. Each artist makes the song their own and it’s wonderful that way. If everyone performed it the same manner it would be dull and limiting.

I’m a huge Gershwin fan, and I think this version certainly does Summertime justice. It’s what Gershwin would have written if he was an pensive, acoustic singer/songwriter from today rather than a partying jazz composer from the 30s.
I sure was expecting this to be Crunk Juice.
