Analog Input
2004-2005
Short-lived but beautiful while it lasted, Analog Input was a collaboration between a big pile of talented Toronto jazz musicians and hip-hop producers. We were never able to nail down that bombastic live sound on a recording; "2004-2005" and the included bonus album of instrumentals mainly reflect my work with Mantikore and DJ Rambler, which shows off more of our electronic and hip-hop than jazz and funk influences.

01. Stay (Slowly)
The album version of "Stay" was produced first, and was actually made for one of my commissions a couple years ago. On the suggestion of my client I used some of Sting's lyrics from "Fields Of Gold" for the chorus. This melody became a favorite with my wife, so I tweaked the words to make it a more general love song for inclusion on Summer. For live shows we usually end up playing this slower version with added piano, drums and backing vocals.
02. In The Shade
This is a little track I put together using a few picked guitar chords from "In The Sun" as well as some other guitar parts and a synthesizer line which were cut from the song as they caused too much clutter.
03. Slip Away
I wrote this as an addendum to the song "Summer" - you'll notice they're the exact same tempo, and both employ phrases in 7 or 14 beats - but because of the swung time it just didn't flow. At one point though I thought it would be the ending track on Summer.
04. Taking Her Home
A somewhat off-centre song about marriage. The singer, with every good intention, proclaims his love for his wife-to-be, shrugging off his problems with alcoholism and drug abuse. Notice the "mountain" reference to Summer's bonus track "I'm Going To Marry You". The tone of the lyrics is juxtaposed with the cheery mandolin, 808 drum machine and Nintendo synth, until one of my favorite bits at the end where I drop my faux Beach Boys croon fest.
05. Sublet (Acoustic)
This is the original form that "Sublet" took. It was the first song I ever wrote for my wife, though I actually wrote it a couple weeks before we started dating because I was already quite certain I was going to marry her. On our first date we played each other songs in the pouring rain, and this was one of mine - though at the time Esther didn't know it was about her. I didn't end up recording this until the week before our wedding, because we wanted to give our guests a CD of some of the songs we'd written for each other and it just wouldn't have been complete without this one.
06. In The Sun (Original Demo)
At first I thought this was all that "In The Sun" was going to be. I liked the lyrics and the melody a lot but I just recorded it simply and moved on. It wasn't until several months later that the idea came to make the second half all grand and layered, even though my friends and I had already been planning out the music video for it.
07. Oh No (Edit)
If you love "Oh No" but don't quite feel like committing to all 4 minutes of it, this abridged version is for you! A little more radio-friendly.
08. Summertime
I've always loved Gershwin's "Summertime", and then one day I heard it in my head in 3/4 and a major key. So I recorded it.
09. In The Sun (Music Video Version)
After shooting the footage for "In The Sun" we realized we had planned a few too many vignettes to actually fit the duration of the song. An 8-bar extension allowed us to squeeze in what we wanted without making the thing overly unmusical, and gives folks who really love it a bit more time to soak in that beautiful D A G chord progression.
